AS 4654.1: Waterproofing Membranes for External Above Ground Use Testing
AS 4654 is the primary Australian standard that relates to the physical performance properties of waterproofing membranes specified for use in external, above ground waterproofing systems applied to roofs, decks, balconies and planter boxes in buildings to prevent water ingress and protect structures from moisture damage.
Independent Testing Australia (ITA) is equipped with specialised apparatus to test materials and provide data to coating manufacturers, specifiers, builders and waterproofers to determine product suitability for use in the Australian construction industry and satisfy documentation requirements of the Australian Building Code (BCA), the National Construction Code (NCC) and Australian Paint Approval Scheme specifications (APAS).
ITA is now fully NATA-accredited for AS 4654.1 testing (Accreditation No. 21257), meaning every AS 4654.1 test we perform carries full NATA endorsement — providing manufacturers, specifiers, builders and waterproofers with independently verified results that strengthen compliance, product claims, and confidence across the supply chain.
ITA is equipped to conduct the following AS 4654.1 testing:
· AS 1580.403.2: Abrasion resistance
· ASTM C794: Bond strength
· AS 4654.1 appendix B: CSIRO Moving joint test
· ASTM D6207: Dimensional stability
· AS 4654.1 appendix A: Elongation at break / heat aging / ultraviolet resistance / tensile strength / durability
· AS 4654.1clause 2.5: Field seam strength
· AS 4654.2 clause 2.6: Temperature resistance
· ASTM E96: Water vapour transmission rate
· BS EN 12691: Puncture resistance
· BS EN 12310-1: Tear resistance
What NATA-Endorsed AS 4654.1 Testing Means For You
🏭 Manufacturers
Fully NATA-endorsed AS 4654.1 testing provides powerful validation of product performance, supporting stronger claims, smoother market acceptance, and increased confidence from specifiers and regulatory bodies — in both domestic and international markets.
📐 Specifiers & Architects
Independently validated membrane performance claims reduce risk and support more robust specification decisions — helping design professionals meet compliance requirements with greater confidence.
🏗️ Builders
Products independently verified under AS 4654.1 reduce the risk of failure, rework, and costly defects — giving builders greater confidence that membranes meet Australian job site performance requirements.
🔧 Waterproofing Installers
NATA-endorsed membranes reduce uncertainty around product suitability and strengthen your documentation and QA processes — helping protect against disputes, callbacks, and warranty issues.
